When I moved to Chicago in 2011 I first lived in a cozy little studio apartment that I rented for the summer. It felt amazing to have a job in a big city and to experience living on my own for the first time. I arrived home from work one day to find a flyer under my door for a t-shirt design contest held by my leasing agency, Planned Property Management. They were calling for design entries that best described your experience renting from them. My idea was to show all the questions and conversations I had with the wonderful team I worked with about relocating to Chicago. I lived in Lincoln Park, so I turned my questions into a portrait of Abraham Lincoln. My entry made it to the top 20 of their contest, where it then moved onto a voting system through Facebook.
